Bitcoin Breakout reshaped crypto markets after billions in leveraged positions closed, while Bitcoin rallied sharply and total cryptocurrency market capitalization expanded during an unusually volatile trading session.
$3.5 Billion Liquidation Wave Meets Strong Recovery
The Kobeissi Letter reported crypto’s seventh-largest liquidation event on Thursday. About $3.5 billion in leveraged positions disappeared within 24 hours. Yet market capitalization simultaneously increased by approximately $280 billion.
That contrast defined the session’s remarkable market structure. Forced closures occurred while aggregate cryptocurrency valuations moved decisively higher. Bitcoin buyers absorbed selling pressure throughout the volatile advance.
The rally began with Bitcoin trading near $64,000 during quieter hours. Momentum strengthened rapidly after the morning trading session accelerated. Prices soon broke through several major psychological trading levels.
Cointelegraph separately reported short liquidations exceeding $3 billion across August 19 and 20. Bitcoin represented roughly $1.65 billion of those liquidated positions. Combined market liquidations approached $3.25 billion during the reported period.
Bitcoin Price Climbs Above $72,000 Amid Volatility
The intraday chart showed Bitcoin advancing from nearly $64,000 before surging. The first breakout carried prices above $65,000 with accelerating momentum. Bitcoin later approached $69,000 alongside growing liquidation activity.

By approximately 6:00 AM ET, Bitcoin reached the $70,000 threshold. The chart marked its first $70,000 print since June 2. Prices briefly consolidated between $68,000 and $69,500 afterward.
A second powerful move pushed Bitcoin beyond $70,000 during renewed volatility. Around 8:30 AM ET, another liquidation marker displayed approximately $3.5 billion. Bitcoin continued climbing instead of reversing sharply after that event.
The displayed price eventually touched $72,419 before stabilizing near $72,417. The broader chart also recorded an intraday high around $72,661. That session represented a 4.85% daily gain according to provided data.
Daily Chart Signals Breakout Beyond Rising Channel
Bitcoin’s daily structure changed after months of gradual recovery. June established a low near $58,000 following May’s decline. Successive higher lows created a clearly defined rising channel afterward.
The latest daily candle broke above that channel’s upper boundary. Price reached approximately $72,661 during the breakout session. Follow-through now remains necessary to confirm sustained technical strength.
The next resistance zone appears near $76,000 on the chart. Beyond that area, previous trading focused around $80,000 to $82,000. Those levels previously encountered considerable selling during earlier market weakness.
Momentum indicators also improved alongside the latest advance. The MACD histogram expanded positively with stronger upward separation. Meanwhile, traders continue monitoring $70,000 as developing support during future pullbacks.
